For vocal sextet and electronics

10 minutes in one movement.

Commissioned by Ekmeles Ensemble
Premiered April 21, 2026, at St Paul’s Chapel, New York, NY

The piece inhabits the precarious threshold between interior thought and exteriorized expression, challenging theconventional hierarchy that treats speech as a mere vessel for stable, semantic meaning. The performers navigate aworld of scattered syllables and phonetic friction, where the impulse to communicate stutters against the impossibility offinding a "perfect" word. Yet, even in these fragments, a trace of meaning persists. They carry the resonant echoes oflanguage, existing as an endless chain of deferral that dissolves and extends into sonic textures. This fragmentation alsoinvolves a dissemination of expression, drifting into the sensory space unsettled by embodied gestures. Instead ofpantomiming text, they enact an autonomous experience that resists linguistic capture. Silence is reconstituted not as anabsence, but as a dense, formless space where the body’s breath and movement speak what syntax cannot. This unspoken text is drawn from each performer's own writings and curated by the composer. Through collaboration, thesememories and emotions are then translated into gestures. Moving beyond the surface of literal signification, the workinvites an intuitive perception of what remains unsaid, allowing the dissolution of language to become an act of liberationthat reveals an entangled trace within the vibrant, unresolved tension of silence.
